<![CDATA[
At 23:13 the @$# hit the fan calls started pouring into Delaware County 911 center for accidents along I-95 and I476, after a snow squall placed a thin layer of ice and a dusting on snow on top. This caused for treacherous driving conditions for commuters on the county roadways. Company 62 and Engine 70 along with Ridley Township EMS where dispatch to I-95 SB for an accident. Rescue 62 responded with six and was advised they were receiving additional calls in 62’s local for accidents in the area. As units started to arrive at the interstate, 911 advised they are receiving a call for a tractor-trailer accident with entrapment on fire northbound I-95 reported mile marker 7.5. BLS unit 62-7 had arrived at a minor accident SB I-95 in the general area. Fireboard then stated Boeing Fire Engine79 was out with a tractor-trailer reported heavy entrapment. The initial southbound dispatch location on I-95 units, where able to see from the Chester City border to Tinicum Township and clearly no accident was visible.

Chief 70 was able to switch over to Boeing’s private channel and Engine 79 stated the truck left the interstate and was accessible from the back of Boeing Defense Contractors property. Units made their way off road into the back wooded areas of I-95 and Boeing via from RT 291 to find a Fed-Ex tractor at the bottom embankment approximately 200 ft from the top of the interstate. E-79 accessed the crash site through a security fence with a rotary saw to gain access to the truck and patient. Truck traveled parallel along the steep embankment before flipping several times changing direction part way and coming to rest at the bottom against trees and a small water way. The truck received massive damage, collapsing the passenger’s side and ripping the A post from the truck. The patient was not trapped by the truck but required extrication due to elevation. Crews from Rescue 62, Engine’s 70,79 along with several police agencies extricated the patient in to a stokes. The remaining crews made a man lift, the patient was moved over the creek then handed off to Ridley Township EMS BLS 70-7 and Taylor Hospital’s Medic 102. The patient was in serious condition, transported to the Trauma Center at Crozer Chester Medical Center in Chester.

Both stations dump the house bring Pipeline 62, Air 70, Squad 70 and remained on location for several hours while a Lyon’s Heavy Recovery Company brought the truck back up onto I-95.

After the call, the fire department learned a 31 car from Ridley Township Police had responded to the initial accident on southbound I-95. He witnessed the truck loss control go airborne over the guide rail and disappear over the embankment. The officer stated he went to the northbound side and placed flares on the road so the fire department could find the accident. He told crews, he advised Delcom to let fireboard know but none of this information was relayed to the responding units. The accident location was further hindered because other calls coming for accidents on I-95 in Chester and the Blue Route (I-476).

The police officer observation and quick action along with Engine 79’s ability to relay the correct location the driver would have not been found until at least daylight. The resting location of the truck was so far off the interstate passing motorist would never notice or even Boeing Security doing property line checks. ...]]>

<![CDATA[At 0320 hrs Company 49, Rescues 43 and 62, as well as EMS units from Ridley Township where dispatched to the 1300 block of Girard Avenue in the Milmont section of Ridley Township for an accident with possible entrapment. Police arrived first on location and reported that a car had struck a tree and two people were trapped. The first arriving EMS unit (Ridley 7B/70-7) confirmed the initial reports of heavy entrapment of both occupants. Rescue 43 and 62 arrived, and reported that one vehicle had struck a large (10-12 foot in diameter) oak tree. The rescue was further complicated by the car being wedged between the tree and a telephone pole. Companies went into service with multiple tools, initially removing the roof of the vehicle as well as the driver’s side door.

At 0353, Rescue 62 finished extricating the driver whose right leg was trapped under the upper dashboard which had collapsed on the patient at the time of impact. After being extricated, the driver was transported to Crozer Chester Medical Center. Rescue 43 then went to work on freeing the front seat passenger. The passenger’s legs were also heavily entangled under the dashboard, firewall and passenger side door. Rescue 62 was assisted in the extrication of the passenger by the crew of Rescue 43.

After being unable to gain sufficient access to the patient through the passenger side, Rescue 62 removed the driver’s seat from the vehicle. This allowed for a better insertion point to utilize two rams to lift the dashboard. Rescue 43 had to utilize a “third door cut” to allow more access to the patient. Crews were unable to push the dashboard and firewall forward due to the position of the vehicle between the tree and the pole. After an extended amount of time, the crews were finally able to push back enough metal to allow EMS access to the patient. The passenger was extricated at 0423 onto a backboard, and also transported to Crozer Chester Medical Center. The transporting EMS units were Medic Ridley 7,Ridley 7B (70-7) 67-7 and Medic 102 (Taylor). ...]]>

<![CDATA[
Although call volume has been down this year, the members of station 62 have been keeping busy with a multitude of other projects.
In October of this year, the company purchased a new rescue truck to replace our 1993 Spartan 3D Rescue. The 1993 Spartan has a sale pending to another fire company.
The new Rescue 62 is an HD Spartan /Rescue1 tandem axel (2000). It is a walk-in truck, with seating for ten people in the cab. The truck is equipped with a 430HP Detroit, a 35kw PTO generator, a 12,000 pound front end winch, and deep bumper compartments. The truck also has a 150 foot air hose reel, a 9000 watt Wilburt light tower, and a telescoping camera tower.
Inside the command center of the truck is space for multiple mobile radios. It is also equipped with a computer station which allows for viewing of the video recording while the camera tower is operational.
In mid-November, the truck will travel to ESI in Horsham, Pennsylvania to have two electric Holmatro pumps installed. ESI will also be installing the trays and bulk heads in the Rescue. These additions will give the truck the ability to simultaneously run eleven different Holmatro rescue tools.
S.M. Vauclain Fire Company would like to thank Laura Woolver and her co-workers from Republic First National in Rochester, Indiana for all of their support during the purchase of our new truck.
In addition to the purchase of the new Rescue 62, the company also received an enhanced version of Paratech’s Interstate Vehicle Stabilization System. This system has the capability to support over 150,000 pounds of weight. To this system we have added heads which allow us to access higher points for rope rescues, and also allow us to perform rescues from structural collapse.
In the coming months, Vauclain Fire Company also looks forward to applying for the VRSR (Volunteer Rescue Service Recognition) certification, which is issued to the providers of advanced rescue by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. ...]]>
